Irish track teams build from 'base zero'
DeSales has a roster heavy with underclassmen as the new season begins.

WALLA WALLA — The DeSales track and field team will begin its 2008 season with a roster heavy on underclassmen.
That’s because the Irish lost eight seniors from last year’s squad that sent 10 qualifiers to the Class B state meet in Cheney.

Blue Devil track teams confident
Wa-Hi's boys reload after last season's fifth-place state finish, and the girls also are optimistic this year.
By Roy Elia of the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin
WALLA WALLA — As the 2008 track season approaches, both the Wa-Hi boys and girls teams seem to be poised for successful campaigns.
And with good reason, it appears.
Harvey Wellington is in his 41st year on the Blue Devil coaching staff and is optimistic that his 2008 boys team can sustain excellence displayed by last year’s squad that won both the CBL district and league titles — Wa-Hi’s fifth league championship in eight years — and placed fifth in the Class 4A state meet.
That confidence comes despite the loss of three talented seniors. Aaron Mettler, now at Eastern Washington University, was state champion in the javelin, Andrew Battenburg was second in the 200 and fourth in the 400, and Adam Neace finished fourth in the pole vault.
“We have 107 kids out there,â€

2008 Cashmere track teams are on the fast lane to success

Track head coach Jeff Kenoyer has reason to be optimistic.
Of the team's boys, who placed eighth at state, all but one athlete with state experience are returning. Among the girls' squad, that placed seventh at state, all but three athletes are returning.
"Things look pretty good," said Kenoyer during an interview late last week. "Those who went to state are looking forward to going again."
The team's 80-plus athletes began practicing for their first meet on March 14, the start of what Kenoyer said will be a particularly tough season.
"We had a coaches meeting last Sunday (March 2) and most of the teams have bigger teams," Kenoyer said. "So it's going to be good competition all the way through."
Chelan and Lake Roosevelt are some of the teams to beat, Kenoyer said. Judging by last year's results, the other teams have fair reason to fear the orange and black. Cashmere placed among the top two teams in the league, the district and the regional championships.
Some of the athletes from last year's season who are coming back for more include runner Seth Pierson, runner Kylie Brunner, pole vaulter Jacob Carson, runner Chris Ruether and shot putter David Parker.
Looking past this season, the 2009 campaign presents a unique challenge for Kenoyer. A fourth boys' sport - soccer - will be included.
Kenoyer believes adding boys' soccer is going to hurt the existing spring sports.
"Thirty-eight students voted for boys soccer," he said. "Of those 38, 35 come from tennis, baseball or track. We really didn't need anything, it was just something people wanted, so it's what they got."

Boys and girls team on fast track
Ian Dunn
Staff Writer
If you said the Cascade track team was on the fast track, you would be correct. The boys and girls teams feature a number of talented performers who knocked on the door of the state meet last year and figure to kick it down this season.
Second year head track coach Rob Rosenau is no stranger to this group of athletes, having served as the assistant track coach for the past 14 years.
"We're young. But I'm enthusiastic. We have good returners," he said.
Leading the way for the girls team are sophomores Michelle Harrod and Haley Darlington. Harrod ran on the 4x400 meter state relay team, and Darlington just missed state in the 100 run.
Another key performer is senior Roxanne Reimer with the discus. She also just missed state last year.
For the boys, returning is senior state qualifier Boone Davis in the 400 run. Junior Aleas Gomez fell just short of state in the discus competition Rosenau said they are making a push in the pole vault this season, an event just added last year.
"We had three kids go to the pole vault camp at Central Washington University," he said, "Thomas Steinke, Martin Forchemer and Kendell Martin."
Last season the girls team finished second in league, while the boys were fourth.
"Our girls can contend, and the boys should be competitive," he said. "All the kids are quality athletes. As for the freshmen, we don't know what we have yet."
The first track meet for the Kodiaks is Friday, March 14, at Cashmere against Brewster, Cashmere and Cle Elum.
"We have basically everybody back," he said. "These kids know what they're capable of doing. Only three kids did not make make regionals. The kids that have come back are working harder than ever. That really sets the tone for everybody."
