Thanks to Becca for adding some context to our frequent contributer as VTechVaulter; i.e., the name and person of Brian Mondschein.

If I can push the context one step further: Is Brian the son (or grandson?) of Irving "Moon" Mondschein, the Olympic decathlon competitor of my generation?

And do I remember that, in addition to his decathlon credentials, Moon Mondschein was also a world-class high jumper?

haha. yes sir you are correct. moon is my grandfather. i believe it was the 48 olympics, and he placed 8th i think. didn't perform very well in his own eyes, said he was a bit under the weather.

he was also a pretty spectacular high jumper, back in the western roll era. 2 time ncaa champ

also played football for NYU in college. im jealous of his skillz

nice jump Brian. Now if we could just get you to hold high enough to bend a pole. What would that be... like 17'6'' or 18'. All you would need is like a 2 and a half foot push-off and you'd get 20 feet. Just kidding. But seriously, nice jump. You should be knockin on 5.60.

you tall people, I wish I could hold at 16'2. Great job, 5.53 is a big jump, I know you will get 60 soon.

Mondschein Earns ACC Honor
Senior named Performer of the Week
April 10, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech senior pole vaulter Brian Mondschein was named Atlantic Coast Conference Performer of the Week Monday afternoon for his efforts at the Clemson Invitational.

Mondschein, a native of Hummelstown, Pa., won the pole vault with a personal-best vault of 5.53m (18'1.75"). The mark broke Tech's school record and qualified him for the NCAA East Region meet. The height was a Clemson outdoor facility record. His vault is the best in the ACC this year and is the second-best nationally.

Mondschein will return to action April 14-15 at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
