Regionals Blows

Unread postby smokinvaulter1 » Mon Apr 07, 2003 11:25 pm

What do you think about 40 vaulters at one regional. It going to eliminate alot of vaulters that deserve to be at the national meet. I think this regional thing blows.

I think its a good thing....but i also think that the qualifying mark needs to be much higher. The qualifying height for Pac 10's (5.00) is higher than that of Regionals (4.90)! If qualifying came up to a minimum of 5.20, then the regional system would be awesome, but 40+ vaulters is ridiculous.

Midwest Regional is going to have a ton of qualifiers and about 5-6 over 18' or capable of it. Then you'll have another 5-6 over 5.35 so theres are great load of natioanal competitors that won't get to go then there will be regionals were 16' get you to natioanls. this is nationals its a joke. They should go back to the other way. But it too late now Disaster on the rise.

16' is not going to get anybody to Nationals... not even here in the East which is probably the weakest.

we'll see if ur humming that same tune in june. because as it stands there are guys who are capable of jumpin 4.90 and they haven't yet. if there are truly 40 vaulters at one the regional meet in may, then the system may be flawed, but next year they will base the minimum standard on the the 100th mark from this year.

Not to mention all the 16 (even 17) footers who havent had a decent meet yet. The way the weather looks for this weekend things could go nuts!!! I have 3 guys that have jumped over 16 that had a bad first outing (not to mention the 3 guys from IU) and sat out (long story invloving the festivities at FL Relays) this past weekend. Theres 6 more from the midwest just from 2 schools who will get that mark this weekend at Mizzou.

Regionals is not a bad thing only a new thing. Every other sport has national champs that prob werent the best (anyone have KY and AZ goin all the way in their bracket and get hosed?). The intent here is to get a true TEAM champion (not some school with 7 full ride athletes from 6 different countries). More of you will get to compete at nats than ever before!!! You just have to get there a little different way. Yes the standard is a little low this year (heck its low in every event) but it WILL get tougher!!

Regionals is a good thing in a way because you will get the best competitors at the national meet. Maybe not the best jumpers as far as height. Complain if you like. I made it to nationals for indoor, however, outdoor will be much harder. A bunch of guys came back out of the floorboards, so the decending list will be a nightmare to make. I'm all for Regionals, but I guess it just depends on what kind of position you are in.

It does put a little more importantance on competing well instead of going for one big mark - otherwise - warm weather and tailwinds become the big ticket - lets see - Northern States - got to go south!
Plant like crap sometimes ok most times
