NCAA coach coaching HS vaulters @ HS meets

What do you think of NCAA DI Pole Vault coach coaching high school pole vaulters at high school track dual meets, relays, invitationals and CIF like a well known NCAA Los Angeles area pole vault coach has done for years?

nothing wrong with it, so long as he's got the club and everything like he does to do it under. It's perfectly legal. The guy makes a living off the vault, a sport which we all know there is not a whole lot of money in. He does the sport a great deal by coaching so many kids along with his college vaulters and world class men and woman. I don't see anything wrong wtih what he's doing.

Could those high school vaulters jump as high if Anthony wasn't helping them at meets?

What are some of the good tips he gives?

Do you have to be a member of his club to get his help at meets?

How much does it cost? Do I have to be from Los Angeles?

I want to vault higher too.

I attended a small private high school and all we had for a track was a worn out dirt oval around the football field. Needless to say our vault set up was sub par. My freshman year the coach let me try vaulting, he handed me a pole, a box, a shovel, and pointed me in the direction of the old high jump pit. I managed to make due with what I had that season, I jumped 11'. At the CIF championships my parents got a flier for anthony's clinics, so
i gave them a try and the rest is history. I jumped with Anthony all through high school with club, while at UCLA, and a pathetic attempt at post colligate. If you don't know who Anthony is; check out the video of him dancing on stage at reno @ www.neovault.com

I saw his site. The problem is my little brother is still in high school and needs help competing. He's vaulting well in practice and meets but needs to step it up when it comes down to the big meets. Will Anthony help him if he makes it into Arcadia or Mt. Sac relays? Was he any help to you when you were in high school at those big meets?

I owe alot to him for helping me in high school and beyond, but I think I only had him at maybe 5 or so meets throughout my entire high school career.

Did Anthony help improve your form at those high school meets? How far did you make it in CIF?

I think the issue here is.........a college coach (club or not) can NOT have contact with a high school athlete while at the competition. It IS againest NCAA rules. He may only speak to that athlete AFTER they have left the competition site (gone home or changed in their home fac locker room). Be carful with this one guys.......what he is doing (if he is actually coaching or even talking to hs kids at their meets) is a major violation (sounds like several of them) that could be a BIG problem.

I forgot to mention.............having a club does not waive the rules on recruiting. It provides for contact on your home facility (not away meets).

ucvaulter, usually if you work with a club coach, you are not going to have them at most of your meets.

Steve may be able to answer this one for me. (it's Brad Pickett; what up) Is Anthony technically a volunteer coach at UCLA? This could be how one would get around such violations. If not, I'm sure he is doing everything legally, he's been around the sport for a long time and certainly knows the rules. Man, I wish he could have coached me through College.
