Man Chelo got HOSED! One freaking centimeter separates the ones going
to Fayetteville and the ones stayin gon the beach in Florida. This year
it took 4.10m 13'05.25 to make the field (as opposed to last year's
4.05m 13'03.50) and 17 gals got their ticket punched to the big dance.
Most of the big names are here although there are a few missing due to
injuries - last year's #2 Chelsea Johnson and #4 Jenny Green come to
mind immediately.  Still though there's a pretty darned talented field
here. We got Washington senior Kate Soma who leads four - count 'em -
four Huskies into the final - her teammates include Stevie Marshalek,
Ashley Wildhaber and gymnast Carly Dockendorf. Could be some serious
points for U Dub. We also have the resurgent Lacy Janson and Shayla
Balentine, former Arizona standout Amy Linnen now vaulting for Kansas
and lots of others. Even have a 'New Englander" in the field. Well
technically she's from Jersey but heck she goes to a school in Beantown
so we'll take it. Newton, MA's Molly Lederman was an agonzing 4cm away
from making the field as well...

Since Pennsylvania is considered a northeastern state so we actually
have 2 northeasterners competing here. Butler, PA native Melanie Buczko
rounds out the roster from the top right corner of the US of A...

Kate has done quite well for herself this year. She's been slowly
gaining ground fininshing 12th indoors & 7th outdoors in 2003 and 5th
indoors & 2nd outdoors last year. She PR'd HUGE in February breaking
the 14 foot barrier for the first time and also claimed the MPSF
Conference crown against a stacked field. She's won every collegiate
meet this year and held her own against the elites at Reno as well.
She'll be tough to beat...

highest placing since 1988 ... won her first Pac-10 title, and the
first-ever by a UW women's vaulter, with a school-record clearance of
14-2 at the Pac-10 meet in Tucson ... one of three UW women's vaulters
to compete at the NCAA outdoor meet in 2004, most of any school ... one
of four UW women to vault 13 feet in 2004, a feat matched nationally
only by Nebraska ... qualified for the NCAAs with a second-place finish
at the West Regional, at 13-5 3/4 ... cleared 13-5 3/4 indoors at the
Pac-10 Invite to break her own UW indoor record ... placed second in
the vault at the MPSF Championships ... earned Academic All-Pac-10
second team honors. 2002-03: Became UW's first female pole vault
All-American with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA meet, despite

attempt at 13-9 1/2 ... injury kept her out of U.S. Senior Nationals ...
climbed to eighth in Pac-10 history with a mark of 13-10 at the NCAA
West Regional, nearly a nine-inch PR and good for second place ... mark
would have won every Regional except the West, where Oregon's Becky

Lacy got back up over 14' this winter but still seems to be having some
troubles on the runway. At the USATF Indoor meet the former indoor champ
(in '03) ran through all but one of her warmup jumps and nearly half of
her competition attempts. Hopefully she can get her head back on
straight because when she does decide to take off she is one talented
gal in the air...

All I can say is wow - after setting the scholastic record as a senior
in high school (13'08 I do believe) Shayla hasn't exactly set the world
on fire over at San Diego State. She's only made one NCAA final and
no-heighted at that. However thing are looking up - two weeks ago she
won the MWC championships with a PR (her first since that
record-setting jump) and first 14-foot vault for her career. Awesome!
Hopefully we can look forward to a lot more performances like that.

Stacie had a bit of a slow start this year but rebounded to take the
SEC crown and then snare a seasonal best last Saturday. This is her
first return trip to the big show since 2003. She cracked the 14'
barrier in '04 but injuries kept her out of all the championship meets.
This is her year to rebound YEAH!

After a tremendous freshman season that saw her compete injured
most of the year, Stacie Manuel managed to earn all-America honors, a
SEC Championship and SEC Indoor Track Freshman of the Year honors.  As
a sophomore, Manuel was again hit by the injury bug, missing the indoor
campaign because of minor surgery.  She returned outdoors looking as if
she never missed a step, as she flew over 13 feet in her first
competition.  Two weeks later, the Willmar, Minn., native would
accomplish one of her season goals clearing 14 feet.  She capped off
her outdoor season with a victory at the prestigious Penn Relays when
she cleared 13-9 12 to become the second Lady Razorback in as many
years to claim the Relays' top pole vault prize.

As a true freshman, Manuel spent most of the fall semester
recovering from shoulder surgery, but returned to action in January and
made an immediate impact by becoming just the second Arkansas vaulter to
clear 13 feet indoors.  She matched her 13 feet, 1 12-inch vault at the
Houston Indoor, then improved by 14  inch at the Tyson Foods Invite.
At the conference championships, Manuel put on a show along with
teammates Jennifer Lincoln and April Steiner as the trio went 1-2-3 for
24 points.  Manuel would end up with the gold as she cleared 13-8 14 for
the title.  The clearance made Manuel the first freshman to win a pole
vault title in SEC history and was a guarantee that she would be
competing at the NCAA Championships.

Two weeks after her amazing vault at the SEC meet, Manuel
returned to action determined to make a splash at nationals.  Joining
her teammates on the runway, Manuel was once again splendid by clearing
13-3 12 to tie with Lincoln for eighth place, earning Manuel all-America
honors.

Manuel was hit by injuries again during the outdoor season, but
nagging soreness did not keep her out of the Lady Razorback lineup
often.  She was still able to briefly set Arkansas' pole vault record
when she sailed over her season and personal best outdoors at 13-5 12
at the John McDonnell Invite.  Her injury kept her from repeating as
the SEC Champion outdoors, but she still managed to tie for fourth.  At
the NCAA Championships, Manuel made her first bar at 12-3 12, but failed
to clear another as she finished 22nd overall.

PRIOR TO COLLEGE: Perhaps Manuel's greatest accomplishments in
high school were her three all-America honors, but those are just a few
of many accolades for the Willmar, Minn., native.  A three-year
Minnesota Vault Classic Champion and four-time Centennial Lakes
Conference Champion in high school, Manuel also set the Minnesota state
record in the vault three times while at Willmar High School and
currently holds the outdoor record at 13-4, also a national high school
record in 2000, and indoor record at 12-6.  As a sophomore in high
school, Manuel won a state championship, finished second at the high
school outdoor national meet, was named Minnesota's Gatorade Track &
Field Athlete of the Year and was a US Olympic trials qualifier.
Following that phenomenal spring and summer, Manuel took a pair of
state championships home as well as a second-place finish at the
national high school indoor meet as a senior.

PERSONAL:  Born Stacie Lynn Manuel on Dec. 6, 1983, she is the
daughter of Tim and Aundie Manuel.  She has two sisters, Kristen and

It's not a question of when but how high will he eventually go.
Everyone's wondering when the kid wonder will crack the 19 foot
barrier. Patience my friends, patience. This guy is still basically
learning the event for crying out loud. He's the defending outdoor
champ, got 2nd at the '04 NCAA Indoors, 2nd at this years USATF Indoor
meet and he's just a freaking sophomore.

Continued his family's storied Duck legacy with a record-breaking
collegiate debut both indoors and outdoors in 2004. Upped personal best
by 7 1/2 inches in the pole vault as a freshman, and rewrote UO's pole
vault record by 3 3/4 inches (18-10 1/4), formerly held Olympian Kory
Tarpenning (18-6 1/2, 1985). In other Duck all-time rankings, stands
eighth in the decathlon (7,589), and is five feet and three inches away
from the 10th position in the javelin (215-2 / 220-5). At other points
of outdoor season, made Olympic Trials appearance, broke Pac-10 record
in West Region win (18-10 1/4), and also added Pac-10 crowns in pole
vault and decathlon. In 14 pole vault contests as a Duck frosh, posted
nine wins, two runner-up placings and another third- and fourth-place
finish. One of the most accomplished performers in Oregon and national
prep history, the 2003 Athlete of the Year and outdoor high school pole
vault record holder (18-3) won four Oregon 4A state titles (3 pole
vault, 1 100) among his 10, top-eight honors in the sprints, jumps,
hurdles and javelin.

2003-2004: NCAA Pole Vault Champion (Outdoors)/NCAA Runner-up
(Indoors): Capped his record-breaking season as the youngest entry in
the U.S. Olympic Trials' pole vault field (14th-prelims, 17-8 1/2) in
mid-July in Sacramento, Calif., and missed the final by two positions.
Opened postseason at home in the elite Prefontaine Classic (eighth,
18-4 1/2) at Hayward Field in late June and defeated the returning NCAA
champion Eric Eshbach of Nebraska by 3 3/4 inches (18-4 1/2). Ended
collegiate season with an NCAA title in the pole vault (18-8 1/4) with
his second-highest height ever. Qualified for the NCAA finale with a
school and Pac-10 record performance in the West Regional Championships
(first, 18-10 1/4) and broke the former mark of Stanford Olympic silver
medalist Toby Stevenson (18-9 1/4, 2000 in Eugene). In mid-May, he
posted an outdoor then-personal best in the Pac-10 Championships in
mid-May (first, 18-3 1/4), while he simultaneously scored in the
javelin (fifth, 215-2). The week prior, won collegiate decathlon debut
(first, 7,589) as Ducks went 1-3-4-5 in the event, although he
subsequently declined an NCAA automatic invite since he topped the
7,500-point barrier to focus solely on the pole vault in the NCAA
finale in Austin, Texas. Also tried to boost team's scoring chances in
league high jump but no-heighted at opening height as team eventually
claimed runner-up finish. During regular season, picked up home wins in
the Oregon Preview (17-6 1/2) and Pepsi Team Invitational (17-5).
Overall, competed 10 times outdoors in the pole vault and cleared 18
feet four times after he had cleared 18 feet twice as a prep (18-3 and
18-0 1/4 as a senior). Ended outdoor pole vault season ranked first in
the Pac-10, region and NCAA, 11th in the U.S. and 21st in the world
based on season bests. Indoors, soared over 18 feet in four of five
competitions, including a runner-up finish (18-4 1/2) in the NCAA
Championships behind the returning NCAA champ Brad Walker, a 19-foot
vaulter from Washington who needed a 7 1/4-inch season best to win
(18-8 1/4). In early February, broke Kory Tarpenning's school record
for the first time with indoor personal best in the United Heritage
Invitational (first, 18-8 3/4) - the top collegiate mark of the indoor
campaign. Also picked up regular season wins in the Bobybuilding.com
Invitational (18-0 1/2) and the Mountain Pacific Championships (18-1
1/2). In collegiate year-end decathlon rankings, stood seventh
nationally in the NCAA (and second among frosh) and first in the region
and Pac-10, and in the javelin ranked 41st in the NCAA, 13th in the
region and seventh in the Pac-10 by season bests. At year-end UO awards
banquet, received team's George Scharpf Outstanding Athlete Award.

Prep: Closed the book on a storybook 2003 senior season as the Track
and Field News Boys Athlete of the Year after a record-breaking senior
campaign. He claimed his second outdoor national title in June in the
USA Junior Championships pole vault (18-0 1/2), the same month he broke
the national prep record by 3/4 inches to win the Golden West
Invitational (18-3). Indoors as a senior, he won the national title
(5.28m 17-3 3/4) and went for a national indoor record of 17-7 but
broke his pole (and subsequently his left thumb) on his first attempt
and declined further tries. At season's end, he led the national
outdoor prep scene by 11 1/2 inches (the second-ranked season best was
17-4 1/2), and indoors by a 2 3/4-inch margin (second was 17-1). His
prep personal best of 18-3 from '03 ranked 15th in the U.S. at year's
end and met the 2004 Olympic Trials 'B' standard (5.50m, 18-0 1/2). As
a junior, he also led the nation in the pole vault and was a prep
All-American. He upped the state record in early June in his win in the
Oregon-Washington Meet of Championships (17-7 1/2), and also in his
second state meet win (then-state meet record 17-0). Other notable
season wins and 17-foot pole vault efforts came in the Golden West
Invite (17-2), USA Junior Nationals (17-6 1/2) and Sandy Invitational
(17-0 1/4). He ended the year atop the prep season best list (17-6 1/2)
with a 6 1/2-inch lead, and indoors ranked fifth with a season best of
16-0. As a sophomore, he ranked fourth nationally (and tops among
non-seniors) with an outdoor best of 16-10, and indoors he ranked in a
tie for second and was again the top non-senior (16-0 3/4). As a
freshman he tied for 14th on the national season best list (16-0) - the
best among freshmen or sophomores that year. At the state prep level, he
led the Sandy High School Pioneers to the 2003 state 4A team title
thanks to top-two finishes in three events. In only his second meet
back after a broken thumb (with his first meet a narrow third-attempt,
opening-height clearance at 14-0 two weeks before in the district
qualifier), he won the pole vault (state meet record 17-7) and 100
(10.88), and took second in the 200 (21.86). As a junior, he set a
then-state record in the pole vault and won by a two-foot margin
(first, 17-0) and also scored second in the 100 (10.83) behind UO
teammate Jordan Kent and also placed in the 300 hurdles (sixth, 39.21).
In the 2002 state rankings, he ranked first in the javelin (211-0),
sixth in the long jump (22-0 1/2) and tied for seventh in the high jump
(6-4). His sophomore season in 2001, he won the state pole vault and
tied the state meet record (16-6, only four inches short of his
then-personal best), and added top-three finishes in the 300 hurdles
(second, 39.17) and javelin (third, 211-9). As a freshman in 2000, he
took second in the pole vault behind current Duck All-American and
senior Trevor Woods at the same final mark but with more misses at a
one-inch new state meet record (second, six-inch PR 16-6), and also
placed in the javelin (10th, 175-1). His high school coach Anouxa
Vixathep was a Pac-10 scorer for the Ducks (long jump, seventh, 22-9
3/4, 1998) and owned a personal best of 23-9 from his senior season in
'98. High School: Sandy '03.

Personal: Skipper follows the path of his older brother Art who as a
prep senior in 1988 was a national prep record holder in the javelin
(259-10) and TFN national boy's athlete of the year. As a collegian,
the former Duck school javelin record holder (251-8) won one NCAA
title, two All-America awards and a Pac-10 title from 1989-92. At the
national level, he was a two-time Olympic Trials qualifier with a best
finish of fifth in 1992. He was also a 1993 World Championships
qualifier after taking second in the 1993 USA Championships
(76.60m/251-4). The elder Skipper was tragically killed in a small
plane crash near his home in Sandy in Clackamas County in October 2001.

Ray packed his bags and left the confines of Salukiland in order to
compete for the Huskers. His traels have been rewarded with 3 flights
over the 18' barrier. His latest one snagged him a Big 12 championship
trophy. He's also the guy who dented a bench at Texas when he flew into
the grandstand during an errant warmup jump so quite literally, watch
out for this guy...

In 2005, ranks second among four Duck returning pole vaulters that met
Pac-10 and/or regional qualifying standards in 2004. Among collegiate
returnees, ranks seventh in Pac-10 in pole vault, 14th in regional and
39th nationally based on 2004 season bests. Altogether, upped personal
best by 9 1/2 inches the previous two seasons, and is only 2 3/4 five
inches away from joining the 17-foot club - with three Ducks claiming
the honor the past four years. Outdoors in 2005, will need to clear
5.05m (16-6 3/4) to net regional championship invite.

2003-2004: Pac-10/West Regional Qualifier (Pole Vault). Was one of four
Ducks to compete in pole vault in the West Regional Championships, but
missed opening height. Was eligible for Pac-10 duty, but did not make
trip since the runner-up Ducks could only take 24 athletes to the
conference finale. In late April in Eugene, posted 2 1/2-inch personal
best in Oregon Invitational (third, 16-9 1/4). At outdoor season's end,
ranked 11th in Pac-10, 18th in regional and 56th (tie) nationally in
pole vault. Indoors, entered season with an indoor personal best of
16-0 3/4, and went 16 feet or higher in four of five competitions.
Ended his season with back-to-back indoor personal best efforts in the
Mountain Pacific Championships (seventh, 16-6) and NCAA Last Chance
Qualifier (fifth, 16-6 3/4) - both Pac-10 outdoor qualifiers.
Personal/Seasonal Bests: Outdoor - Pole Vault - 5.11m (16-9 1/4) (PR),
Oregon Invitational, Eugene (4/24/04). Indoor - Pole Vault - 5.05m
(16-6 3/4) (PR), NCAA Last Chance Qualifier, Seattle (3/6/04).

2002-03: Pac-10 Qualifier (Pole Vault). Outdoors competed in five pole
vault contests, with two above 16 feet at end of season, and the other
three only an inch away. Upped personal best by four inches at home in
Oregon Twilight (fourth, 16-6 3/4). Entered outdoor slate with best of
15-11 3/4, and cleared 15-11 in first three outings - Oregon Preview
(first), Pepsi Team Invite (first-tie) and Oregon Invite (fourth).
Cleared 16 feet for first time in Cardinal Qualifier in Stanford in
early May (third, 16-2 3/4). Threw javelin for the first and only meet
since his prep days in Oregon Twilight and missed Pac-10 mark by only
eight feet (fifth, 189-9). Was eligible to compete in Pac-10
Championships since he met the 16-4 3/4 standard, but was not selected
for the runner-up Ducks' 24-man travel roster to the meet.
Personal/Seasonal Bests: Outdoor - Pole Vault - 5.05m (16-6 3/4)
(then-PR), Oregon Twilight, Eugene (5/3/03). Indoor - Pole Vault -
4.90m (16-0 3/4) (then-PR), Husky Preview, Seattle (1/18/03).

2001-02: Outdoors, competed unattached locally in two meets. Just
missed 16-foot barrier in Oregon Twilight with 6 3/4-inch outdoor
personal best (third, 15-11 3/4, 4.87m), and no-heighted in Oregon
Invitational. Indoors, would have ranked fifth on squad in pole vault
with season best of 15-7 in Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.

Prep: Owned prep pole vault best of 15-3 from 2001 senior season.
Placed in Oregon 4A state meet in pole vault as senior (sixth, 14-0)
and junior (10th, 13-6). Finished fourth in 2001 Oregon-Washington
Border Clash (15-3). Ranked third in state in pole vault as a senior.
Also owned javelin best of 180 feet. Four-year letterman in track, and
was team captain, MVP and Most Inspirational Award winner. During fall
season, was a three-year letterman in football, and was first-team
all-league pick as a senior and squad's most inspirational award winner.

Personal: Business Administration Management major.

Binghamton pole vaulter Quiller qualifies for NCAA Track & Field
Championship

VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore pole vaulter Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y.)
has become the first Binghamton University track athlete to qualify for
the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championship, the school
learned Monday night. Quiller is tied for 14th place in the nation in
the pole vault, with a season-best height of 17-6.5 feet. The top 14
athletes in each event are selected for the NCAA meet, which will be
held March 11-12 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

"This is big for our program," head coach Mike Thompson said. "We have
only been Division I for four years and there are going to be a lot of
great programs such as Nebraska and Arkansas at this meet. I'm sure
some of the other coaches have not heard of Binghamton so this will
give us good exposure."

"It's an honor to be the first person from Binghamton in this meet,"
Quiller said. "Binghamton has had a great tradition (at the Division II
and Division III levels) and to be a bridge to the Division I level is a
honor for me."

Quiller will compete in the pole vault on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
