Dan Pfaff at U of Florida

Unread postby 95 » Thu Feb 03, 2005 9:02 pm

Pfaff-- the former coach of Jacob Davis and Brian Hunter-- is reported to be an assistant coach on page 46 of the T&F News w/Darold Williamson on the front. What does this mean for Florida vaulting? Does anyone know what his basic ideas about how the vault works?

not to put down coach pfaff... but the person most responsible for brian hunters sucess is our coach.. bob phillips here at vt. His pr was somethin like 15'3 in hs.s and in his second year at VT he jumped 5.50 meters (18ft) and went 18'4 in the summer under coach phillips before he left for Texas. he only ever jumped 4 inches higher.

and just to clear something up as well. a lot of people ask us if our coach pushes us to open high because Hunter chose to do so, but i can tell you that bob never wanted hunter to open as high as he often did.
pfaff is a great coach dont get me wrong.. I just feel bob is an excellent coach and deserves some credit.

When I was at Syracuse, coach Kebba Tolbert gave us workouts that were created by the philosophy of and with the help of coach pfaff. Kebba is a protege (I think thats the word) and good friend of coach Pfaff.
The workouts involve long dynamic warm-ups, lots of long and triple jumping, shot put throwing, hurdle hopping, and very short vaulting practices, concentrating on a few, very high-quality vaults. And when I say few I mean ten or fewer.
Oh, and there is the basic running intervals and lifting, lots of lifting.
The workout regiment is very tiring, but the main philosophy is that if you build better athletes, you will build better vaulters/jumpers.
The results are pretty astounding for those who do the work. Kebba showed us numbers on the LSU boys who worked with the regiment, and they were pretty damn good. Walter Davis and Russ both had some sick numbers in the jumps and throws, and they and their teamates found pretty good results in their events, to say the least.

Russ- You could probably give some input into the topic. What did you think of that kind of workout?

Oh yeah. I agree with Brian. Bob is a great coach/2nd father. Knows his vaulting, and maybe more important, his vaulters.
