KEARNEY — The University of Nebraska at Kearney has filled its cross country and track coaching staffs, head coach Brady Bonsall said Tuesday.


During the cross country season, Marcus Witter will serve as the Lopers’ volunteer assistant coach. Witter will also work with the distance runners during the track season.

Joining recently hired Scott Jorgensen on the Loper track and field coaching staff will be Ross Fellows, Johnna Jeffries, Lonnie Polacek and Drew Schmidt.
In track, Bonsall will again coach the long sprints and distance runners with Jorgensen serving as an assistant coach in charge of the throwers.
A former Loper, Fellows will be an assistant and coach the horizontal jumps, short sprints and be the multi-events coordinator.
Jeffries (high jump and horizontal jumps) and Schmidt (hurdles and pole vault) are the program’s new graduate assistant coaches with Polacek (pole vault) joining Witter as a volunteer coach.


Polacek will work with the Loper pole vaulters for a second straight season. A teacher at Kearney’s Horizon Middle School, he has a son, Nate, who vaults for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Cal. state Fullerton (NCAA Div. 1) is currently looking for a pole vault coach. Strong returning athletes with great base.

Will Thomas Joins Track & Field Staff as Assistant Coach

Former UConn Decathlon All-American Brings Five Years of Ivy League Experience

BERKELEY - Will Thomas, who spent the past four years on staff at Harvard and Dartmouth, has been named an assistant track & field coach at California, returning to the school where he began his coaching career.

Thomas served as a volunteer assistant with the Golden Bears during the 2005-06 season, one year after graduating from Connecticut as a three-time All-American in the decathlon. In his second stint with the Bears, he will coach all of the pole vaulters, as well as assist with the throws and multi-events. In addition, Thomas will be involved all aspects of recruiting and other staff responsibilities.

"Will brings a myriad of talents to the coaching position, and I think the overall program is going to benefit from having him on staff," Sandoval said. "His two previous coaching positions were in the Ivy League, so he certainly understands the academic mission in combination with athletics. I think he'll fit in here well."

During his one season at Dartmouth in 2009-10, Thomas coached athletes in the pole vault, jumps and multi-events, and served as the recruiting coordinator for the program. He coached eight All-Ivy League selections and a pair of champions at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships.

From 2006-09, Thomas was an assistant at Harvard, coaching the vertical jumps and multi-event athletes and overseeing recruiting efforts. During his time with the Crimson, he mentored 14 All-Ivy performers, eight Heptagonal champions, three NCAA qualifiers, two NCAA All-Americans and six school-record holders.

Thomas was a three-time All-American decathlete and two-time team captain at Connecticut as a collegian, finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 2003 in addition to fourth in 2004 and eighth in 2002. In 2003, he was ranked 23rd in the world and seventh in the United States in the decathlon.

A four-time Big East champion in the decathlon, Thomas was named Most Outstanding Field Events Performer at the 2003 Big East outdoor meet, and he was selected the conference's top field events competitor at the 2004 indoor championships. Thomas captured four additional Big East titles during his career, including the high jump as a senior in 2005.


A 2005 graduate of UConn, Thomas earned his bachelor's degree n kinesiology. He replaces Scott Slover on the Cal staff.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The restructuring of the University of North Dakota's track and field program continued today as head coach Dick Clay announced the hiring of assistant coaches Thomas Crummy and Amanda Solberg.
Crummy and Solberg will assist both the men's and women's teams with event-specific coaching. Crummy will work primarily with the hurdlers and pole vaulters and will also serve as the program's recruiting coordinator. Solberg will work primarily with UND's throwers.

"These staffing additions begin a restructuring of the track program, focusing upon providing more specific event coaching for our student-athletes," said UND Director of Athletics Brian Faison. "Head women's cross country and track and field coach Dick Clay will assume administrative responsibility for both the men's and women's programs for the coming year."

Crummy spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Wayne (Neb.) State University. In his first two seasons, Crummy coached one All-American, 17 national provisional qualifiers and 18 school record-holders. A native of Argyle, Minn., Crummy enjoyed a standout career at Bemidji State, where he was a multi-time all-conference performer. He won a conference pole vault title at the 2005 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Crummy earned his bachelor's degree from BSU in elementary education with minors in mathematics, communication arts and literature and coaching. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in sport and recreation management.

Veteran Ivy League Coach Cook Hired to Coach Combined Events

EUGENE, Ore. -- Jamie Cook, a 10-year Ivy League veteran coach and a former Big Ten decathlon champion, has been named assistant track and field coach, Oregon Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna announced Monday. Cook will oversee the combined events, men’s and women’s hurdles and the men’s high jump and pole vault.

"We are extremely excited to have Jamie join our already talented staff," said Lananna. "I would like to thank Harry Marra for his help with the search. Coaches Johnson and Powell played a meaningful role in identifying this outstanding candidate.

"Jamie’s experience as an international level athlete at Penn State will serve him well on our staff. He has been a valuable member on Penn’s staff and his recruitment of great student-athletes at that Ivy League institution made him a perfect match. He will be a great addition to our well-rounded program as we emphasize our decathletes, heptathletes, vaulters and high jumpers."

Cook has been the top men’s assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania since 2001. During his tenure with the Quakers, Cook coached 64 Ivy League champions, oversaw seven school records, and helped Penn capture a pair of team titles (2001-02). The Quakers placed 11th at the 2003 NCAA Championships.

He has also been the combined events coordinator for the prestigious Penn Relays for the last 10 years.

In conjunction with his coaching duties, Cook developed training programs with an emphasis on speed development that have been used by Olympians, as well as players from the NFL, Major League Baseball and English Premier Soccer League. Cook’s speed training was also utilized by Penn’s reigning Ivy League champion football team.

He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Off the track, Cook played a key role in Penn’s track and field alumni relations, which helped lead to the establishment of a $1,000,000 endowment in 2003 and saw an annual fundraising total of $250,000 in 2010.

Prior to joining the Quakers’ staff, Cook was a three-time All-American in the decathlon for Penn State from 1995-98, where he was also a Big Ten, IC4A and Penn Relays champion in the multi-events during his collegiate career.

Cook was additionally honored as a three-time Academic All-American while competing for the Nitany Lions.

He was a 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials competitor in the decathlon, and competed in six USA Track & Field combined events (decathlon/indoor heptathlon) from 2002-05. Cook also represented the United States versus Germany in the Decathlon Duel of 2003.

His personal best in the decathlon of 7,853 points came during his 2004 Olympic Trials year.

Cook graduated from Penn State with a degree in kinesiology in 1999 and then in 2006, completed his work in the executive education program at Penn’s Wharton School of Business with a concentration in finance/accounting.

Cook takes over for Marra, who will remain in Eugene working with post-collegiate decathletes and heptathletes, including Ashton Eaton.

"Harry Mara has done a wonderful job for the University of Oregon and its student-athletes," said Lananna. "His work with Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen, and the fact that all of our combined event athletes set PRs last season, speaks for itself. He is an excellent coach and even better person.

"We are grateful to Coach Marra for his enthusiasm, his teaching, and his loyalty. Our community is very fortunate that he and his wife will remain residents in Track Town."

Jenni Ashcroft, who served as an Oregon volunteer assistant for the past four years, has been promoted to assistant track and field coach, UO director of track and field Vin Lananna announced on Thursday.

Ashcroft will oversee the women’s pole vaulters and high jumpers.

The former all-American pole vaulter at the Unversity of Nevada, who spent four seasons (2003-06) on the Wichita State track and field coaching staff, will also assist with the UO cross country team and middle distance runners.

Ashcroft takes over for assistant coach Maurica Powell, who will remain on staff as a volunteer assistant. Powell is married to Oregon associate head coach Andy Powell and the couple is expecting their second child in October.

Ashcroft graduated from Nevada in 2002 with a degree in secondary education. She added a master’s degree in sports administration at Wichita State in 2005. The former Sheridan High School standout won the Oregon Class 2A pole vault title in 1998.

“I am extremely excited about the reorganization of the track and field staff,” said Lananna, who added assistant coaches Robert Weir (throws) and Jamie Cook (combined events, hurdlers, men’s vertical jumps) in recent weeks.

“Coaches Robert Johnson and Andy Powell will play significant roles as lead coaches of our men’s and women’s teams. The assistant coaches will provide outstanding teaching and recruiting for all events, while our volunteer coaches will help us to provide quality time for every student-athlete in every event.

“It will be my goal to focus on the big picture issues which will solidify our position as Track Town, USA, with a great university team, exciting events, unrivaled facilities, and a legendary tradition.”

Dan Lefever Promoted to Associate Head Coach
Lefever will serve as associate head coach of the men's track & field team.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou track and field head coach Brett Halter has announced that current combined events/jumps coach Dan Lefever has been promoted to associate head coach of the men's track and field team at Mizzou. Lefever has coached at Mizzou for eight seasons and in that time he has established himself as one of the top combined event coaches in the nation having mentored 15 All-Americans and nine conference champions.

"I am pleased to have the opportunity to elevate Dan to associate head coach of our track and field program," Halter said. "Dan has done a remarkable job developing our decathletes, heptathletes and jumpers over the last several years. He has established himself as one of our nation's top combined event coaches. 2010 was another banner year for Lefever as he mentored both Nick Adcock and Lars Rise to All-American status at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. He also coached Adcock to a Big 12 heptathlon and Big 12 decathlon title, making him the only student-athlete in the history of the league to sweep both titles in the same season. Not only that, but Adcock earned USTFCCA Midwest Regional Field Athlete of the Year and reset the Big 12 and school record in the heptathlon with his 5,938-point effort at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

Track & Field Adds Brooke Demo to Coaching Staff
KENT, Ohio -- Brooke Demo joins the Kent State track & field coaching staff as an assistant coach/director of operations, director of track & field/cross country Bill Lawson announced today (Aug. 27).

“We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to hire Brooke Demo,” said Lawson. “She’s going to bring a fresh perspective as a young coach and recent student-athlete. We’re looking forward to what she can bring to the program.”

Demo, who will primarily mentor student-athletes competing in the jumps, comes to the Golden Flashes after assisting with the pole vaulting group at the University of Oregon during the 2009-10 season.

“I’m very excited to be a part of Kent State track & field along with Coach Lawson and all the other coaches on the staff,” said Demo. “They work great together, and I’m really excited to be a part of that.”

Demo arrives with strong credentials as a student-athlete at Wichita State University, where she advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships twice and was a four-time regional qualifier in addition to two provisional qualifications to the NCAA Indoor Championships. She set the school outdoor record in the pole vault with a 13’-9.25” mark at the 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Championships and earned top three finishes in the pole vault at seven MVC championships, taking home MVC gold in the event in ’05. She was a four-time indoor (’05-07, ‘09) and three-time outdoor (’05, ’08-09) All-MVC selection. A two-year team captain, Demo helped guide the Shockers to two indoor and three outdoor conference titles.

Demo graduated from WSU with honors in ‘09 while carrying a cumulative 3.80 grade point average as a mathematics education major. She garnered recognition as a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District VII pick in ‘07 after earning honorable mention the previous year. Demo also earned MVC Scholar-Athlete selection three times, picking up first team honors from ’06-07 after honorable mention accolades in ’05. She was named to the MVC Honor Roll three times and twice to the Commissioner’s Academic Excellence list. The MVC recognized Demo as the Dr. Charlotte West Scholar-Athlete Award winner following her senior campaign.
