Alright Adam, the subject of this thread is "Me being a moron," but after last saturday, I can confidently say that I am a bigger moron than you ;)

We had an All-Comer's Meet at University of Houston. I was just there to coach about 12 of my vaulters, and since I'm retired, had no intention of jumping. The meet went on all day though (started warmups at 7:30am and didn't leave until 8:30pm), and it was really dragging, so when the guys warmup began, I just got an impulse to jump, and did, wearing blue jeans, ripped up old flats with no tread on the bottom, a t-shirt, baseball cap, and my wallet in my back pocket. Didn't warm up, no jogging, no stretching, no pop-ups, no run throughs. Just grabbed a pole, guessed a spot on the runway, and took off first trip down! Ended up going through 7 poles, started at 12'0 and jumped 13'6. My last 5 jumps I was so tired I didn't think I could make it back down the runway (since I'm retired, out of shape, and hadn't eaten anything all day and it was like 4pm). If I had started higher though, probably would have cleared 14'0 or 14'6 b/c I had a lot of blow over 13'6. Even got "the clap" on my last attempt, and had the whole crowd behind "the guy jumping in blue jeans with his wallet in his back pocket and holes in his shoes!"

Yup, I'm a moron! But it was fun! :D

Nice work old timer. Haha, just kiddin. Why don't you get back into jumping? Sounds like you had fun. Anyhow, I was just wondering because our assistant coach just got out of college a few years back, and she has already pushed vaulting aside for herself. I don't get it!! Then she'll vault on an impulse like you did, and then... well anyhow, I think you should go for it again.

Thanks for the encouragement John. I've been out of college for about 7 years now, and go through phases where I'll jump for 6 months, then lay off for 9. I was jumping seriously a year ago and even pr'ed, but my old bones couldn't take it and I screwed my right shoulder up to the point where I couldn't lift my arm above my head, and my back was so bad I couldn't turn my head to the right. Things are pretty-well healed now and I'd like to jump regularly, the hard part is time. I coach 20 college vaulters, and 50 club vaulters, plus run a business, so finding time to jump or train is hard as I work from 8am-9pm every day. If I wanted it badly enough, I could make time, but I'm just too lazy to train anymore. I imagine I'll jump more in the summertime when things slow down a bit. Thanks again!

Yeah, you've got an excuse. Not like my coach. Anyway, do what you see fit, and it sounds like you've got a full plate.

Lonestar, Welcome to "older age". Older age is when you can just out and out tell any one "I just don't feel like it today. Maybe tomorrow, but not today". No excuses or reasons, just "I don't feel like it". The second to last time I jumped I was working with some highschoolers. I too grabbed a pole (this was back in the late 70's) so the idea of "series" wasn't even thought of. So I grabbed an old cat-a-pole and told the kids to put it to 8' feet. Well by the time I was done I fianally quit at 11'6" and the kids said I cleared it by about a foot and a half. Now the moron part of the story. I was 25 pounds over weight, out of shape, and rather than admit that I seriously was "really hurting" I limped around for the next few days trying to recover. There wasn't anything on my body that didn't hurt. I couldn't tell anyone what caused the pain 'cause I was playing hooky from work to go work with the vaulters in the first place. Later............Mike

What are you doing

I was just wondering if you are trying to be a better vaulter or just trying to learn how to do flips and stuff. The flips are cool and all that but there not going to get you to nationals. Don't mean to be too critical, but I know that you can be a good vaulter and just wanted to check that you are working on the right things. By the way how is that trust thing working for ya.

Lonestar, my wife and I were in the stands in Houston waiting for Ryan to jump. We were sitting with a lot of vaulter parents and everyone noticed "that guy in the blue jeans". I think you got the biggest applause of the group from the stands, anyway. Good to hear who the mystery jumper was. We sure got a kick out of your vaults.

Hi Dean, this is Kris Allison. We've spoken on email before and I met you at the Roundup. Thanks for the applause! It was a lot of fun!
