The new Studies in Dart-Fish are showing that most elite vaulters don't really "Jump Up" off the ground. They stay tall and "Run over there toe"
The typical elite high speed takeoff angle is more like 13 degrees not 30.
This is something that was found during research that was unexpected, but true. The logic behind it makes sense. How are you going to jump off the ground at full speed when you can't swing your arms like a jumper. Carrying the pole changes the whole dynamics of the vertical takeoff. If a long jumper can run 9.5m/s and barely get a 30 degree takeoff angle without losing energy, how can you expect someone running the same speed with a pole in there hands to hit that same angle with the proper transfer of energy. The vertical angle at takeoff does not have to be that great with the use of s-glass and c-fiber poles. People are to caught up in the traditional steel/bamboo pole takeoffs, which you obviously can't transfer as much horizantal energy into vertical so you need more vertical from the get-go. Not the case these days.
Granted, you can see better results from a short run when you jump off the ground better, but how fast are you going? and does that really carry over to full? These are questions that still need answering. Not because someone said so, because numbers can prove it, and so far they haven't.

I wonder how this may change the way that manufacturers place their sailpiece. I know it has been effective thus far, but this information could have the possibility of yielding a more efficient placement of the sailpiece, and possibly changing other properties of the poles.
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

so there i was.... about to take off... and i says to myself, "self, am i gonna jump here, or am i'm going to run off the ground with a bit of a penultimate to git me a bit of lift without losin' all that blow i just built" well, i guess i did the second one.. yeah, and in that drill with the noodle.. there still isn't a real "jump" happening.. if you really wanna pay attention to what's happenin' at a takeoff, you'll see that if done properly, all you're doing is cyclin' your trail leg all the way through behind you and then all in one motion cyclin' it forward like you're still runnin', but, you're off the ground.. get it? it's not no brainiac thingy thing happening... if you're shoulders are square, you're blocking, you're putting energy in front of you rather that letting you're body continue forward, i like to says to my vaulters, "vaulters, you're left shoulder and right hip are doin' the leadin', SHOW ME THAT REVERSE "C"" bla bla bla..
not sure why i did that.. oh, guess what.. i got roped into coaching at moorhead state in stupid minnesnowta.. i'm gonna hate life.. why you ask?? well.. yesterday, our high temp was -12.. yes, that was the f'ing high.. today, when i felt it at -2, i tought to myself, "hey, this ain't that bad out".. i wanted to eat a bullet at the thought.....
