I walked on at OU coming out of highschool with a PR of 13'6". They had me compete unattached until I busted 15'6" at the second meet of the year, the next weekend I was travelling with the team.
Through the years I saw freshman walk-on and most quit b/c they couldn't handle the early season workouts.
But I don't know how it works at UCONN.
