Eckley sets D-II outdoor record

Junior clears 13-2.50 to establish new mark

It's official: no NCAA Division II pole-vaulter has ever soared higher than Katie Eckley after her record-setting performance Saturday at McMurry's Indian Relays.

Eckley, the reigning NCAA Division II outdoor national champion, cleared 13 feet, 2.50 inches at Indian Stadium to win the event and set the NCAA Division II outdoor record. Her mark ties her own personal mark, which she established on Feb. 13 at Arkansas during the indoor season. Eckley now owns both the NCAA Division II indoor and outdoor all-time bests in the pole vault.

The previous all-time outdoor best in NCAA Division II belonged to her former ACU teammate, Meredith Garner, who cleared 13-2.00 on April 19, 2002, at the Lone Star Conference championship meet in Commerce.

Eckley's mark was an automatic qualifying performance for the NCAA Division II outdoor national championship meet, May 27-29, in Walnut, Calif.

On the men's side, Stephon Greenlee ran a 52.99 to win the 400-meter hurdles and provisionally qualify for the outdoor meet, and Cory Aguilar cleared 16-6.00 to win the pole vault and provisionally qualify for the outdoor meet.

The majority of the Wild-cats' men's and women's track and field teams will begin the 2004 outdoor season Saturday with the Oliver Jackson Open at Elmer Gray Stadium.
