The selection of Starankewicz comes on the heels of an exciting pole vault contest Saturday at the CCC Championship meet at Hillhouse High in New Haven. She was tied for first place at the end of regular competition with a competitor from Glastonbury.

Each cleared 8-6 but was unable to go higher. In the jump-off for first place, each of the tired competitors cleared 8-3 and 8-6 while only Starankewicz was then able to clear 8-9.

"I felt incredible, extremely happy," said Starankewicz. "It took me all season to get by my p.r. (personal record) and it was in the CCC Championship."

It was a one-on-one Eastern coach Bob Rottler enjoyed witnessing.

"It was an exciting competition and she’s been coming along great," said Rottler. "She started out in outdoor track (last spring) and has progressed.

"She’s a pleasure to work with and she’s done a great job."

With the Class L meet coming up this Thursday at the New Haven Athletic Center, Starankewicz hopes she’ll continue to improve.

"My goal is to keep trying to beat my record," said Starankewicz. "Some of the other girls can jump a lot higher, I’ve heard of 9-6 being done, and I hope to get close to them at least."

An honor roll student who also holds the school’s outdoor pole vault mark at 8-0, she plans to study nursing next year at Naugatuck Community College.

She’s unsure if there is a sports program available, but if so, would contemplate taking part in one way or another.
