how efficient are you

okay so i got bored today while writing a lab. so i wrote a program to determine how efficient a pole vaulter you are by calculating a theoretical maximum height.

Basis is conservation of energy

Assumptions - 100m speed is indicative of runway speed
why this is okay
your top speed is faster than your 100 meter average but you lose some speed when you put a pole in your hands.

assumption 2 - frictional and sound energy losses balance out internal energy gains
why this is okay
because i have no way to account for these values. however my values are working out well

i tested bubka and got that he is 96 percent efficient with a max jump of 6.40 meters

anyway... my reason for doing this is people are always like well so and so jumps higher cuz he holds higher or cuz hes stronger. but now ive used physics to prove how good a "vaulter you are". and the basic conclusion was, faster runners jump higher even if they are less efficient. duh.

so if youd like to know your efficiency. Post how tall you are, your best jump, and how fast you run the 100 meters. and ill reply back.

I think Coach Hannay put a chart like this together,
I am 5 11 my best jump is 14 and I run the 100 11.6-8 so we will call that 12 with a pole?

Hannays said I was 65% efficent with a PR of 13 3

5'6 or 5'7. 15' jump. 100m speed.... lets see, i havent ran it in a while... but my last was 11.5 i think

5'10".....pr 15'5"....100 meter 11.3

MightyMouse
83.2 % efficient. Could jump 16'11

Mecham
87.9 % efficient. Could jump 17'2

Vaultmarq
86.1 % effficient. Could jump 17'10

for those that noticed. the 100 times difference between vaultmarq and mecham is only .2 seconds, which is a velocity difference of .15m/s which added another 8 inches of potential. moral.. get faster

I'm 6' my PR is 18' .5" and run the 100 in 11.00 What does your formula say my pr can be?

5.74 meters
currently 95 percent efficient

wow you really jumped 18' with an 11.0 hundred. interesting. i bet you dont lose much speed with a pole in your hands .

get faster and youll jump pretty freakin high

5'2"...pr 11'3...100m 14.9
also my teamate
5'6ish...pr 12'0...100m 13.7

you

efficiency 90.1 percent, max of 12'7"
def need to work on your speed though.

teammate

efficiency 89.1 percent, max height of 13'5"

6'2 ... jump 15' .... best 100m = 11.1

I dont think the 100m dash is a very effective tool to determine speed. what matters in the vault is only speed in the last 5-10m.

Good thread topic though

well my thinking was that

yes youll be faster in your last few steps that your 100m speed will account for. but your probably not as fast with a pole as without. and controlled speed vs 100 m full out sprint

those were my assumptions anyway. yeah its not perfect, but its kinda fun
