Granite Bay pole vault star reaches new heights at Nike Outdoor Nationals

Scott Roth's redundancy pole vault tour made a triumphant stop at the Nike Outdoor Nationals last weekend, but not without a change in the usual set list.

Competing in Greensboro, N.C., the Granite Bay High junior improved his national season and 16-year-old age group best to 17 feet, 2¼ inches to defeat many of the best high school-aged vaulters the nation has to offer. But Roth first had to clear 16-6 on his third attempt to avoid finishing in third place.

"That really gets you worrying about clearing it," he said. "Those two attempts really sneak up on you fast. You miss one and you think, 'Well, I've got two more.' Then you miss another and that's where all the pressure and stress comes on."

Mike Morrison of Chesapeake, Va., and Jordan Scott of Watkinsville, Ga., both topped 16-6 on their first attempts. They placed second and third respectively after Roth went on to eclipse the winning height on his second try.

Roth's mark bettered the meet record of 17-0¼ set two years ago by Chase Shealy of Brookland-Cayce, S.C. Roth had three misses overall before winning the meet, including a miss on his first try at 15-10½.

His previous best of 17-2 came in winning the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet at Hughes Stadium last month. He is one of only two high school pole vaulters to clear 17 feet this year. The other, sophomore Spencer McCorkel of Bryant, Ark., was eighth in Greensboro.

Roth's string of impressive performances finally ended Thursday, however. Competing in the USA Junior Track and Field championships in Carson, he tied for fifth place with a best of 16-0¾. Morrison won with a top mark of 16-8¾.

Roth had the best qualifying height of anyone entered at the meet, which included college freshmen as well as high school competitors. But he chose to use a slightly longer pole than normal, and that decision may have backfired.

"I thought I had pretty much maxed out on the (15-foot, 6-inch) pole, and I thought I would try the (16-foot) pole in warm-ups," he said. "I put the bar at five meters (16-4) and cleared it easily. Then the winds started shifting - first a tailwind, then a headwind - and I didn't know what to do."

Roth still has a few more meets on his summer schedule, including the IAAF World Youth Championships July 13-17 in Morocco.
