Bent on breaking the national high school outdoor pole vault record, Mary Saxer of Lancaster jumped 13 feet, 9 inches at Saturday's Western New York Classic to eclipse the mark by one-half inch.

Mary Saxer made her season debut in the pole vault one for the national record books.
The Lancaster senior had waited all season for the right conditions, and they finally came Saturday at the 22nd Western New York Track Classic at Lancaster.

Saxer cleared 13 feet, 9 inches on her third attempt to break the outdoor high school national record of 13-81/2. The record had been set in 2003 by Kira Costa, then a senior at San Joaquin Memorial in Fresno, Calif. Saxer skimmed the bar on her way over, but after a few anxious moments, the bar stayed on.

"That's what I wanted - just to get that done. Now I can go for whatever heights I want to," she said. "So if I clear 13 just to get into a meet, I can go right to 14 without worrying about it. It's a national record, and it's exciting that I have it. I'm happy with what I did today. It was my first meet in a while. Now I want to do better than I did at indoor."

Saxer greeted the near-ideal conditions by clearing 12 feet and 13 feet on her first attempts at those heights.

After breaking the record, she missed badly on three tries at 14-3. Saxer had been bothered by a sore shin but said she blocked it out once she started competing.

The 13-9 also broke the New York State and Section VI outdoor records of 13-51/2, set by Tiffany Maskulinski of Iroquois in 2004.

Maskulinski, a senior, was among those gathered around the pole vault watching Saxer make history.

A pulled quadriceps muscle has kept Maskulinski from competing since the Dartmouth Relays on Jan. 7-9. She said she hopes to compete at the ECICs next weekend or may wait until the following week at sectionals.

Saxer is now the national record holder in outdoor and indoor track. In March at the Nike Indoor Nationals at Landover, Md., she broke the record by clearing 14-2, which remains her career best.

Saxer plans to vault the next three weekends at the ECIC Championships at Alden (Friday-Saturday), the Section VI Championships at JFK (May 27-28) and the New York State Championships at Cicero-North Syracuse (June 3-4).

"For Mary to jump 13-9 is not that unusual a vault for her," said pole vault coach Rick Suhr of Rochester. "But I think it's awfully significant that she did this in her first meet in high school. Mary is Mary, and she's going to do those things."

Saxer plans to attend Notre Dame.
