Here's the link.

Looks like we will need to put aside moneys for the new Safely Max box collar.

Re: New rules change for the box cover
It looks like that is a clarification that makes it clear that the new SafetyMax collar is allowed, not required. Actually I think it would disallow the old SafetyMax collar since that does not meet the ASTM. Not all collars have to meet the ASTM, only ones that go into the box.

Re: New rules change for the box collar
Rainbowgirl28, you know it's only a matter of time before the high school will be required to buy this collar. I'm putting in a request for it next week for next year. This will when require kill a few high school programs because of the price. I'm for safety but at what cost?

They didn't mandate helmets when an ASTM was passed for helmets. I guess we'll see what happens here. Clearly it is on their radar.

NFHS NOW Mandates new ASTM Box Collar in 2013
It's happening already. Love Vermont support for PV. Our State's sports rep/authority for HS sports rules just let me know about this NFHS Track & Field change published yesterday. He deals with every HS sport in our state and yet let me know about this change the day it was published. Anyway...
So who writes the rules for NFHS Track & Field? Seriously. The wording is terrible. A 5th grader could write it more clearly. It states that if box collar padding is used, it MUST meet the ASTM standard. Then a note indicates the state association can decide whether it's required or not, but if box collar padding is used, it must meet the ASTM standard and back and back around in the endless circle we go. It makes no sense. Even the word "planting box". What is that? Is that only ever used in a rule book? Is "plant box" more confusing to people?

Re: New rules change for the box collar
With the way the new matts hug right up to the box is this collar really needed? I have not seen one yet but most matts I'm seeing are right on the edge of the box. I am all for safety but if its not needed and will cost us even more money, lets think about it.

Re: New rules change for the box collar
Superpipe I merged your post with the existing one on the topic. The amendment does not require the new box collars, it allows them. They only have to meet the ASTM specs IF they are the type of collar that goes into the box. Regular collars are still fine.
Cowtown PV, the amount of protection the pits that hug the box offer at the the edges of the box is minimal compared to the new box collars, and pits tend to slide around pretty easily. The new collars stay in place fairly well, from what I've seen, and are easier to adjust than an entire pit.

Re: New rules change for the box collar
NFHS has already stated is will be REQUIRED for 2014-2015 season. So get in touch with Gill, UCS, Richey - whoever made your pit and get your pad ordered. they all will have a certified ASTM product before the rule is mandated
Summary – NFHS Track and Field Rules Changes
Page No. 2
7-5-24 Padding meeting the ASTM Specification Standards shall be required for the
start of the 2014-15 track season.
Rationale: For the purpose of minimizing risk of injury to a pole vaulter, require
that planting box padding shall meet the applicable ASTM Specification Standard
no later than the start of the 2014-15 track season. This required implementation
date allows for product availability.

Re: New rules change for the box collar
I was looking at the UCS box collar here http://www.ucsspirit.com/track-field/pr ... -2-3-09-16
What I didn't see in the description or anywhere on the page is if this is technically ASTM certified. Anyone have an idea?

Re: New rules change for the box collar
My opinion is there is a lot of misinformation out there and still issues to be clarified. The ASTM standard has some parts/revisions still in balloting - such as labeling
I feel the two biggest items should be the impact criteria (there was a need for a minimum impact attenuation - otherwise a HS collar could be made of low density nothing and offer little protection) and the design not to impeded pole movement including sliding to the back of the box along the edges. (bottom and sides)
Got a few more months to let things get clarified and see what really is required.
What happens with existing proeduct that meets criteria but not marked as such? Lots of these issues to be worked through.
