Elliott column: Storm star will compete at NDSU
NOVEMBER 7, 2009
SAUK RAPIDS — Nick Weis was lured into the world of pole-vaulting in the eighth grade.
Long a baseball player, Sauk Rapids vaulting coach Rod Fuchs turned Weis into a pole vaulter.
"I went to his summer camp and I got sold on it," Weis said.
At the time, Weis was like anybody attempting a new sport for the first time. He wasn't very good.
"He was just this little, scrawny twerp of a kid," Fuchs said kiddingly. "He was a tagalong kid with his dad going to watch his sister at meets. He was all of 125 pounds and I've got video to prove it, too."
The twerp's filled out. He's 6-foot, about 160 pounds. This week, he confirmed that he made a verbal commitment to attend North Dakota State on a track scholarship.
"It seemed to fit really well," Weis said. "The training method is similar there to what we do here."
He's an excellent student, but not sure of a major. He chose the Bison over a multitude of schools that expressed varying levels of interest, including Minnesota, Brown and just about every private school in Minnesota, as well as small schools in Iowa, Wisconsin and South Dakota.
His sister, Kaitlin Weis, attends nearby Concordia College in Moorhead.
Weis holds the school record in the pole vault (14 feet, 10 inches), which mom Tammy says is a total credit to the outstanding coaching Nick has had. He has been to state twice, tying for second as a sophomore and struggling with a heel injury last June.
His ascent in the pole vaulting world is startling. His best as a ninth-grader was 9 feet. It was 13-7 as a sophomore and 14-10 last year. If he keeps it up, he could be setting state records in 2010.
He's also a swimmer and hopes to get back to state this winter after qualifying in the medley relay as a sophomore. And, he just wrapped up a 6-3 football season in which he was a starting cornerback.
He'll sign a national letter of intent with NDSU in February and shortly after that, he'll be back outside.
Weis could be very good, depending on his health, the weather and good luck.
None of that was working for Weis last June, when Fuchs drove a school van to the state meet. When the van backed up, it would buzz to warn anyone who cared it was going backward.
Everybody in the van thought it sounded like the buzzer in the board game "Operation."
Guess who got a "Travel Operation" board game over the summer? Yes, Fuchs did.
The hope is it'll be put to good use on its way to another state meet.

G-K’s Fischer signs with Ashford
Genoa-Kingston senior pole vaulter Haley Fischer will sign to join the Ashford University women’s track and field team, according to Ashford coach Chris Adams in a news release.
Fischer is a four-year member of Genoa-Kingston’s track program where she qualified for the state meet as a junior in pole vault. She also was a contributor to G-K’s sectional championship in the 4x400- and 4x800-meter relay events.
Fischer also played volleyball for two years, serving as a co-captain as a freshman, while also participating in cheerleading for the Cogs.
“I’m really excited to hopefully start a strong tradition here,” she said. “I really enjoyed my visit and I enjoy the community; it feels a lot like my high school.”

Women's Track and Field Signs Pole Vaulting Duo in Fischer, Garrison
Mon, Feb 1, 2010 at 11:11 AM - [Women's Track and Field]
Haley Fischer of Kingston, Ill., stands with AU assistant coach Tyson Graham
Liz Garrison of Erie, Ill., signs at Erie High School surrounded by family, coaches and Graham
CLINTON, Iowa - The Ashford University women's track and field program was proud to announce the addition of its first two signees for the 2010-11 season, inking pole vault specialists Haley Fischer of Kingston, Ill., and Liz Garrison of Erie, Ill.
Fischer and Garrison are both Illinois state qualifiers in pole vault, an event Ashford has had no entries as of recent history. They represent the first two signees on the women's side for AU Head Coach Chris Adams.
"We're excited to add depth in an event that will help get points on the board as we develop our program," Adams said. "Haley and Liz come from quality programs and they're state qualifiers. We're looking for them to adapt at the collegiate level to make an immediate impact as incoming freshmen next year."

The daughter of John and Taunya Fischer, Haley intends to pursue her degree in Sports Management at Ashford.
Garrison hails from nearby Erie and currently attends Erie High School. She comes from the same school as AU men's track and field freshman Shawn Goodhart, also a pole vaulter.
Garrison is a three-year state qualifier in pole vault and has her sights set on a fourth trip this spring as she wraps up her senior year. She was a member of Erie's volleyball team and collected second-team all-conference honors while leading the league in service aces the past two seasons.
Garrison was also a member of a state-qualifying 4x200-meter relay team as a sophomore.
The daughter of Phillip and Bridget Garrison, Liz, has a plan to start her studies in Biology while at Ashford.
