Castilleja's Anthony makes state history
Senior pole vaulter is first high school girl to clear 14 feet in pole vault

Palo Alto Weekly Staff

Castilleja senior Tori Anthony has been pole vaulting for only three years, but she already has achieved heights never reached before in state history.

When Anthony heads off to her next competition, she will do so as the state recordholder in her event. She reached that level at the recent National Pole Summit at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno when she became the first high school girl in California history to clear 14 feet in the pole vault.

"It's pretty exciting," Anthony said of being the first to reach that height. "It is a nice thing to have."

Anthony earned that recognition and moved among the nation's all-time best with a near-perfect performance in Reno on Jan. 19. She cleared 11-8, 12-4, 12-10, 13-2 and 13-6 all on her first attempt. She won the competition by clearing a then-personal best of 13-10 on her second attempt before vaulting 14-0 on a first clearance. The bar was moved to an all-time prep record of 14-3, but Anthony had three close misses.

In addition to becoming the first girl in state history to reach 14-0, Anthony is now tied for second on the all-time prep girls' indoor list, is tied for third on the all-time list (indoors or outdoors) and is only the fourth 14-footer in U.S. prep history (indoors or out).

"I definitely want to get that national indoor record," Anthony said.

That national indoor mark of 14-2 by Mary Saxer of Lancaster High (N.Y.) in 2005 is also the all-time best (indoors or out) by a prep girl.

Anthony will go after the record a week from now in Washington state. Two weeks later, she'll vault in Boston against America's best in the USA Indoor Championships.

"That's pretty intimidating," Anthony said of competing against America's finest.

Following the indoor nationals, Anthony will compete at the National Scholastic High School Indoor Championships in New York.

Anthony's recent success is coming on the heels of a remarkable 2006 outdoor season as she went undefeated, won the California state title, the USA junior national crown and qualified for the Junior World Championships in Beijing, China.

She topped the year by being ranked No. 1 in the nation in her event by Track & Field News magazine. That amazing season has carried over to 2007 with Anthony raising the bar even higher. In early January, Anthony broke her Central Coast Section girls' record (13-4) with a clearance of 13-6 at the Los Gatos All-Comers meet. A week later, Anthony cleared 13-5 1/2 in Los Gatos as a tuneup for her 14-foot vault in Reno.

Congratulations! :D from the Northeast

Here's hoping the bar even goes higher!.....

Enjoy the moment - there is nothing like it, however, keep it for just a moment and keep moving upwards....the sky is the limit in the vault.
