Men's Track Signs Prized Recruiting Class

Marcus Duncan leads 2007 recruiting class
Nov. 15, 2006

Head track and field coach Wayne Angel announced today the addition of five student-athletes to Illinois' recruiting class of 2007. The five recruits will help return the Illini track program to prominence as the stellar class commits to the Orange and Blue during the early-signing period.

"We feel very blessed and fortunate to have signed this high caliber of athletes," Angel said, these young men will be important benchmarks in helping us determine the destiny of our program. We certainly wouldn't have been able to sign them if they didn't have confidence in Illinois' outstanding academic record and believe in the direction of our track and field program."

The field event crew will inherit a new pole vaulter named Aaron Mathis. Mathis, a Champaign-Urbana native, is an Urbana High School product that has a personal-best vault of 15'3".

"With the new additions to the team, I believe that our prospect of capturing the Big Ten title in the future is very realistic," Angel said.

Prep Trio Sign with Washington State Track & Field

Cougar women's team gains high jumper, pole vaulter and multi-events competitors.

Nov. 20, 2006

PULLMAN, Wash. - Three outstanding high school track and field women student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to compete for Washington State University in the 2007-08 season, Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Monday.

The signed recruits are Maria Creech, a high jumper from Durango, Colo., Alexa Huestis, a pole vaulter from Chehalis, Wash., and Angela Jensen, a multi-events participant from Tacoma, Wash.

Huestis is a senior at W.F. West High, where she cleared 12-feet in the pole vault as a junior. Huestis cleared finished third in the pole vault (11-9) at the 2006 state 3A championship meet behind current Cougar vaulter, Kendall Mays.

"Alexa will be a strong addition to our program in the pole vault," Sloan said. "Her best mark as a junior is 12-feet and I think she has shown the skills on the runway and on the pole to become an outstanding pole vaulter. Her gymnastics background serves her well. Probably the best thing we have seen is about her vaulting is that she is very good on the runway. I'm thinking that she will continue to develop as a senior this year and then come and do great things for the Cougars."

Stokke, from Newport Harbor High School, is a pole vaulter with a PR of 13-5 3/4. As a junior, she took second place at the CIF State Championships with a mark of 12-9, the same mark she hit as a sophomore, when she set the national sophomore indoor record. A member of the USA Today's All-USA Girls Track Team as a sophomore, she set national age-group records of 13-5 3/4 at age 16 and 13-4 at age 15. She set a national freshman record of 12-8 and was a Verizon Junior All-American in 2004.
