Track & Field Inks Seven in Fall Signing Period
11/21/03

BATON ROUGE -- In keeping with tradition, the 27-time national champion LSU track and field team has signed yet another impressive recruiting class, inking seven outstanding athletes from throughout the country and Grenada head coach Pat Henry and staff announced Friday.

"We signed some very good, young, talented athletes as well as two proven junior college athletes," said Henry. "We are pleased with the early signing period and are excited about the athlete's future here at LSU."

On the men's side, LSU landed two prize recruits in Alleyne Lett and Jeffrey Wysynski.

Lett was recruited to LSU as a decathlete after posting impressive results in the discus and the 110-meter hurdles at Central Arizona College. A native of St. David's, Grenada, Lett finished second in the discus at the 2003 Central American and Caribbean Championships and third in the hurdles at the NJCAA Championships (13.98).

Wysynski, a sophomore at South Plains Junior College, is the reigning NJCAA pole vault champion after clearing 17-3 at the national meet as a freshman.

Lady'Back Track Inks Four in Early Period
FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas Lady Razorback track and field team announced the signing of four national letters of intent on Thursday, including Mt. Ida, Ark., native Stephanie Irwin, a pair of distance aces, Dacia Barr and Sarah Cole, and sprinter LaShaunte'a Moore.
"Overall we are attracting some very strong individuals both academically and athletically," Arkansas women's head track coach Lance Harter said. "We tend to pick and choose our early recruits to get the ones that we really want."
Irwin is the second Arkansan to sign with the Lady Razorbacks to compete in the pole vault. Joining Fayetteville native Jennifer (Culp) Lincoln, Irwin bring impressive credentials to the arena including three state pole vaulting championships and four state titles overall. She posted a career best mark of 12 feet, six inches, just off the NCAA regional qualifying standard for outdoor track and has taken numerous first-place finishes at the Arkansas Meet of Champions.
A multi-talented athlete, Irwin won titles in the pole vault, long jump, 200 and 400-meter runs, and broke 31 records in just three years at Mt. Ida High School. She earned a conference championship with Mt. Ida as a freshman, and then posted back-to-back runner-up performances as a sophomore and junior. Not just an accomplished track athlete, Irwin is also a member of the Mt. Ida women's basketball team.
"Stephanie is a nationally ranked pole vaulter," Harter said. "She has cleared 13 feet in practice and the fact that she is from Arkansas is only a bonus. I think that she has the potential to be one of the best vaulters that we have had. You definitely want to keep Arkansas recruits in the state and to have someone of her caliber is very exciting."

Missouri Track and Field Signs 10 Outstanding Student-Athletes

Early signers for the 2004-05 season will come from both near and far

Nov. 20, 2003

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Track and Field Coach Rick McGuire is happy to announce that 10 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Missouri Track and Field squad for the 2004-05 season. The collection that signed in the early, fall period is comprised of seven women and three men and are diverse in both hometown and talent.

"This is by far the most successful early signing in Missouri history," said McGuire. "Not only are these kids a group of exceptional athletes, but they are also excellent students and great people. They will provide a perfect complement to the team we will be returning for the upcoming seasons. We've never come close to signing this many kids this early in the year."

Pole vaulter Tommie Powers from North Richland Hills, Texas has proven herself as one of the top-20 junior vaulters in the nation. Her 12-foot vault last year earned her second in the state of Texas. Powers has an interest in the natural sciences and will be another benefactor of Missouri's academic and athletic prowess.

"Tommie will be a great addition to the pole vaulting core we have here at Missouri as both an athlete and as a person," said Dan Lefever, assistant coach in charge of pole vaulters. "Her addition couldn't be a better fit for our program."

The Gardner-Webb pole vault coach, David Price, did good by signing Jeremy. He's a great young man, a talented athlete and just a top notch individual. He'll be a team leader from day one. Many vaulters have meet him at each of the last two USATF JO National's, he's a class act. We're looking forward to seeing him have a big senior year before moving on to college.

PSU track signs pole vaulter
By The Morning Sun

Stephanie Miller, a three-time state track qualifier from Pierce City (Mo.) High School, has signed a letter-of-intent with Pittsburg State.

Miller earned three state medals in the Class 2A pole vault, placing first in 2001 and third in each of the next two years. Her personal best is 10 feet, 6 inches. She also has qualified for state on three relay teams, placing sixth in the 400-meter relay as a freshman.

"Stephanie is the kind of outstanding student-athlete that we strive to bring to Pittsburg State,'' Gorillas coach Russ Jewett said in a press release. "She has been coached well at the high school level and will undoubtedly adapt well to our training and teaching methods.

"With Stephanie's speed, athletic ability and work ethic, I think she has the potential to be among the best vaulters in our conference within a couple of years and possibly a national qualifier very soon as well.''
