I don't think anyone signs with Juco's, since no athletic scholarships are given, ... or are they, some may give money to athletes. I'm not aware of it though. With Juco's you apply, show up, go to class, and compete.

With NCAA you only sign if you are getting $$. Even if only partial books. If no money is offered then it's just a commitment from the athlete. A verbal commitment only. Thus,
... has signed with ABC Univ. (Binding)
-or-
... has commited to ABC Univ. (Non-binding)

Though some will say they have verbally commited, until the papers are signed.

Hope this helps.

Is that athletic or academic scholarships, or both. Thanks for your input, this helps a lot of people. It may just be that some JUCO schools don't have/do athletic scholarships. Any thoughts, anyone?

Same here, I'm not aware of any on the east coast, especially where a vaulter could flourish. California is different with a very competitive Juco track system in place. I don't know about other states.

Yeah we have athletic scholarships, it's in the Jayhawk conference (Kansas and Missouri) and they have all the normal sports football, basketball, baseball, track, volleyball etc. Some recent famous athletes from Jayhawk conference BYUvaulter- Trent Powell(Paradise Valley) LSU- Walter Davis(Barton) Bengals Runningbacks- Corey Dillon(Garden Cityand Rudi Johnson (Butler) etc... We have many good athletes and usually its harder to get top three at nationals in juco than it is DII! Barton and Central Arizona have amazing athletes Erick Wilson ran a 9.97 at nationals 100m. 100HH-13.4/ 200M-20.1/ 400-45.3/ 400H-50.1/ 4*400-3:05/ 4*100-39.1/ HJ-7-1/ P.V.-16-10/ LJ-26-5/ TJ-52-8/ JAV-235/ Shot-59-8/ Hmmr- 208ft/ 1500-3:42/ 5000m-13:45 California and the Oregan area have their own j.c. nationals.

Austin's Sorenson adds hurdles to future of his track career
By Ross Thede / Austin Daily Herald

Evan Sorenson's success in the hurdles and pole vault has led the Austin High School senior to even greater heights.

On Tuesday, Sorenson signed his National Letter of Intent to run track at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he will pursue his future as a decathlete. The decathlon consists of 10 events, of which the 110-meter high hurdles and the pole vault are a part of. Sorenson earned All-State honors in both events, as well as the 300-meter hurdles, at last spring's Class AA State Track and Field Meet.

"The decathlon, I think, is a great fit for Evan," said AHS track coach Tony Einertson. "He's definitely been a multi-talented athlete for us over the years."

Sorenson qualified for state in the 110 highs as a sophomore but failed to reach the finals, a hurdle he quickly overcame the following spring. Sorenson reached state in three events and earned All-State status (top nine) in each. His ability to compete on a number of different platforms makes him applicable as a decathlete.

"I think it's going to be a fun experience," Sorenson said. "Doing the decathlon didn't really dawn on me until the school contacted me about doing it.

"I want to try something new, and I think I can be successful at it if I work hard."

Hard work has not been a stretch for this Austin student-athlete, who threatened to break the school record in the 110 high hurdles. His career-best time of 14.91 seconds at the Section 1AA meet in Northfield came dangerously close to breaking Tom Krieger's record of 14.74 set in 1979 at the state meet.

Sorenson overlooked a school record to eye a state championship in the pole vault before his senior season is over.

"I think I have a good shot at a state title this year," he said, "but it's not going to be easy. I'll be in the weight room all winter, running the hallways."

Sorenson visited three schools in three weekends as the University of Minnesota, Minnesota State at Mankato and NDSU pursued the local standout. They were all in the running, but Sorenson felt more at home on Fargo's campus.

"That's how I made that decision," he said.

The decathlon coach at NDSU is Stevie Keller, who still competes unattached. Keller is an Olympic trials qualifier for 2004.

"It's obvious by his stats that he knows what he's doing," Sorenson said. "Hopefully someday I can be the same caliber."

At his signing ceremony Tuesday at Austin High School, Sorenson thanked his parents for their support, his coaches for their instruction, and the community of Austin for helping to fund the rebuilding project at the Wescott Track. The upgrade to a Mondo surface track has AHS as the envy of the state, and Sorenson has tried not to put it to waste.

"It's really a beautiful surface to run on, it makes a big difference," he said.

Sorenson said he was unsure of what he would study at college, but he did exclaim an interest in joining the ROTC with aspirations of becoming a commercial pilot someday.

"I'll just major in track, I guess," he said.

As of today, Arizona has also signed, 12-06.25i *Kacey Lundgren (Atascadero) 2/15 LA Indoor Inv (2) (also 12-4 on 4/5). Kacey was an amazing vaulter indoors all of last year, until she got injured just before outdoor season. She didnt vault at all outdoors last year. Were very glad to have her on our team and part of the wildcat community.

Missouri Track and Field Signs 10 Outstanding Student-Athletes

Early signers for the 2004-05 season will come from both near and far

Nov. 20, 2003

COLUMBIA, Mo. - University of Missouri Head Track and Field Coach Rick McGuire is happy to announce that 10 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent and will join the Missouri Track and Field squad for the 2004-05 season. The collection that signed in the early, fall period is comprised of seven women and three men and are diverse in both hometown and talent.

"This is by far the most successful early signing in Missouri history," said McGuire. "Not only are these kids a group of exceptional athletes, but they are also excellent students and great people. They will provide a perfect complement to the team we will be returning for the upcoming seasons. We've never come close to signing this many kids this early in the year."

Pole vaulter Tommie Powers from North Richland Hills, Texas has proven herself as one of the top-20 junior vaulters in the nation. Her 12-foot vault last year earned her second in the state of Texas. Powers has an interest in the natural sciences and will be another benefactor of Missouri's academic and athletic prowess.

"Tommie will be a great addition to the pole vaulting core we have here at Missouri as both an athlete and as a person," said Dan Lefever, assistant coach in charge of pole vaulters. "Her addition couldn't be a better fit for our program."

-- ISU gets Lawrence North runner -- Lawrence North High School senior distance runner and pole vaulter Karla Negron has signed a national letter of intent to compete in cross country and track and field at Indiana State, beginning in 2004-05.

Negron is the second runner to sign with ISU during the early signing period, following Heather Stembridge of Evansville Central. Negron finished 31st in this fall's Indiana high school state finals cross country Meet with a time of 15 minutes and 16 seconds, helping Lawrence North to a third-place finish. She also ran a 14:49 at the Franklin Central Semistate Meet and placed 10th.

"We are getting an outstanding athlete in Karla," said ISU women's coach John Gartland. "She has been an excellent cross country runner this past fall, and she has just begun learning the vault. She should help us in both areas."
