Hood excited about incoming class
ABILENE – ACU head track and field coach Don D. Hood announced a spring signing class on Friday that he believes ranks among the top classes in the nation, regardless of division.
"We've got a lot of quality, quality athletes in this class," said Hood, who led the ACU men to the NCAA Division II outdoor national championships last weekend in Charlotte, N.C. "I think it has to be one of the top 15-20 classes in the country. This is a Big 12 recruiting class. We're losing some good seniors, but we were able to fill in with some great signings, and I don't think we'll miss a beat. We've got people in different events, but we've got just as good a quality in other areas."
Five of the Wildcats' high school signees won state championships last month at the UIL state track and field meet, including two at the Class 5A level with Nick Jones winning the shot put and Tyler Fleet winning the discus. Both Jones and Fleet have also signed with ACU to play football.
The other three state champions are Joe Fields (anchor leg on Lancaster's Class 4A 4x400 relay team), Chad Aguilar (Class 2A pole vault champion from Crane), and Paige Newby (Class 2A discus state champion from Colorado City).
Aguilar is the brother of former ACU pole vaulter and current assistant coach Cory Aguilar, and the brother-in-law of former ACU national champion Angie Aguilar. Cory Aguilar won the 2A state title in the pole vault last month with a mark of 15-6.00.
"Chad is as talented as any vaulter in the state and should develop into a threat to win or score high at the NCAA?meet every year," Hood said. "He has speed and a great build to vault. I anticipate him contributing as a freshman."

Ex-Coppell QB Greaves signs track scholarship with Texas
04:18 PM CDT on Tuesday, June 5, 2007
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
bgeorge@dallasnews.com
Kenny Greaves, a 2007 graduate of Coppell, said Tuesday he has signed with Texas and will compete for the Longhorns' track and field team in the decathlon and pole vault.
Greaves, Coppell's starting quarterback last fall, has given up football to concentrate on track and field. Greaves said he chose Texas over Oklahoma and Navy. Greaves won Texas' Greatest Athlete Decathlon competition last weekend at St. Mark's with a score of 6,497 points, more than 1,000 points ahead of the second-place finisher. The performance qualified Greaves for the USA Track & Field Junior National Championships on June 20-24 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Greaves is competing this summer for Texas Express, which is led by St. Mark's track and field coach John Turek. Greaves finished his senior year ranked third in the area in the pole vault, clearing 16 feet.

College choice moves Jantzi back home
By Christopher Drexel
Kendra Jantzi moved to Ahwatukee Foothills from Oregon three years ago when her father received a job transfer.
Jantzi has had a blast attending Desert Vista High School, but deep down she wanted to go to college back in her home state.
That’s why the senior pole vaulter will attend Concordia University in Portland, Ore., where she will continue her vaulting career this fall.

For Cort Rogers, the sky's the limit as he embarks upon the next stage in his life. As if he didn't spend enough time airborne while on his way to shattering the state Class A pole vault record, he plans to enroll in the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado next year.
Rogers, also 18, is leaving Whitefish as well. The day after graduation, he was on a plane to Pennsylvania to work with his old pole vault coach. Rogers is training for the Nike Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina, an invitation-only meet, where on June 16, he hopes to break his Montana state Class A record of 15 feet 6 inch in the pole vault.
"I feel really good. I've done 16 feet a couple times in practice, and 16 feet has won it a couple years," Rogers said. Asked if he believes he can jump 17 or even 18 feet in college, Rogers answers "absolutely" without hesitation, and there is no doubt in his voice.
Schulz also believes Rogers is up to the challenge.
"Cort is the most technically sound high pole vaulter I've ever seen, which is actually an understatement," Schulz said. "We've had two vaulters go 14 feet in our history, and for him to beat that by a full foot and a half is amazing. What's incredible about him is how calm and collected he is in stressful circumstances. It's unbelievable the composure that kid has."
That skill may well translate into a career as a pilot for Cort, who plans to attend the Air Force Academy after one year of prep school in California.
Although Cort and Courtney are leaving Whitefish, they leave a lasting legacy of professionalism, hard work, self-motivation, headlines and broken records in their wake. It is a safe bet, however, that there are still a few more headlines to come from these two.
