The Hillsborough boys and girls dominated the competition at the Somerset County Track and Field Championships, held Dec. 28 at Lehigh University.

Both the boys and girls teams would have scored even more points had there been a pole vault event at the county meet. Robin Friedman attended a meet the very next day, which was also held at Lehigh University, and set a new Somerset County record with a height of 11 feet. The pole vault is one of the many special tools that both teams have at their disposal and will make them tougher to beat in meets where the event is scored.

Christopher Newport High School Showcase

Guys

1. Michael Morrison Great Bridge 15-06
2. Jordan Cole Atlee 13-00
3. Justin Varner Atlee 13-00
4. Joe Kruse Annandale 12-00
4. Chris Reynolds Kempsville 12-00
6. Chad Cochran Westfield 12-00

Girls

1. Anne Marie Gordon Godwin 11-01 MR
2. Katie Doswell St. Catherines 10-00
3. Betsy Alter Westfield 10-00
4. Sam Blankenship Maggie Walker 9-00
5. Katie Ference Robinson 8-06
5. Carolyn Lewis Heritage 8-06
5. Robyn Atwell Godwin 8-06

Morrison's 15-06 might have been a meet record, I'm not sure. He also looked very good at his attempts at 16-00 as he came down on the bar. Great Bridge is on top of the Va high school rankings again this year, if teammate Magness (pr 15-06) gets healthy again (torn ligaments in foot). Anne Marie Gordon took very good attempts at 11-06, however she has plenty of time to improve. She's only a sophomore and was second at the Virginia state meet as a freshman. Should be a very competitive indoor season.

Joe Kruse is looking very good at practice hes had some legitimate attempts at 14 feet, just needs to start jumping like that in a meet, and who knows I might finnaly get out of my !*@&# rut and become a bit of competition, I dont know what they are doing down in Great Bridge but they put up top state vaulters every year, its crazy

In the pole vault, the Quakers' Anna Heim was third with a 9-foot clearance.

"It's my third time getting nine this winter," Heim, a junior, said. "I'm starting to bend the pole more, which has really helped me."

Entering the competition at 7-0, Heim cleared the first five heights on her first attempt.

"It's my best performance of the winter," Heim said. "I'm back to where I was in the spring."

Heim was not the only county athlete with a top-3 finish in the pole vault. Burlington Township's Cassie Kuti took second place in Group 2 at 8-6.

"She's jumped better, so it's bittersweet," Falcons coach Dan Haussman said of Kuti's jump. "She's in between poles, so she is still trying to adjust. She's been having good workouts, but I don't think she was as ready as she wanted to be."

Kuti's 8-6 jump is her second-best of the season. She cleared 9-0 in a meet last week.
