Up, Up And Away For Thull
Shatters Pole Vault Record; Wethersfield, Weaver Win
January 8, 2006
By REID L. WALMARK, Courant Staff Writer
MIDDLETOWN -- Jordan Thull's record-breaking assault in the pole vault veered slightly off track Saturday at the 63rd Hartford Public Invitational at Wesleyan's Bacon Field House.
Still, the East Lyme senior, who set a New England indoor record Dec. 22 when he cleared 16 feet, broke the meet record..
Thull jumped 15 feet, 6 inches Saturday to win by 3 feet over Weston's Phil Cohen. Peter Fink of Haddam-Killingworth held the previous high of 14-21/2, set in 1998.
But Thull's performance was dominant.
"If you ask him, he'll say he had a bad day," said Russ VerSteeg, an East Lyme assistant who works with pole vaulters. "The consistency Jordan has been having is kind of remarkable for this event."
Thull, likely to decide between Northeastern and North Carolina, was State Open runner-up in the vault last winter at 13-0. Since then he's taken off. He won the New England Championships in June at 14-6. He concentrated in the summer on technique.
Now Thull does a turn at the top of his jump that he says has added close to foot in height.
Thull reached 14-6 in his first vault of the season, then hit 14-8 Dec. 3. He cleared 15-7 to set the state record Dec. 13, then 16-0 in New Haven. He said he expects a period of adjustment once he switches to a new pole that is stiffer and better suited for higher jumps.
"There's a gradual evolution in pole vault, in technique, pole [selection] and height," VerSteeg said. "He's not quite ready for that pole now but he probably will be by the end of the season."
"I'd like to finish the season at 17 feet," Thull said. "With the new pole coming, that should help."

East Lyme senior Jordan Thull set a state record with a 15-6 pole vault at the Hartford Public Invitational Jan. 7 in Middletown.
Thull had a 16-foot effort in the Jack Long Invitational at the New Haven Athletic Center Dec. 23, but Knapp has not yet received documentation, so the vault is not recognized as a record - but it could be soon.
"I'll be happy to verify it," Knapp said. "We don't want to take anything away from Jordan Thull but there are procedures."
Bacon Academy-Colchester boys indoor track coach Steve Browning was the meet director, but must submit a report for Thull's height to become official.
Thull's 15-7 vault in a developmental meet Dec. 13 at Wesleyan was incorrectly reported as official, but was not because the meet contained athletes from club teams, said Knapp, whose MySportsResults.com is dedicated to Connecticut high school track.
Browning said the Jack Long Invitational will meet the qualifying criteria.
Thull's 16-foot jump is listed on DyeStat as fourth in the country this season. Thull plans to participate in a meet in North Carolina this weekend, when he will be visiting the University of North Carolina.

East Lyme - Jordan Thull, an East Lyme High School pole-vaulter, has reached unimaginable heights in the last three years.
Thull's teammates, coaches and opponents never thought they would see an athlete soar 16 feet in the air.
Thull set a new personal best, school and state record while competing at the Jack Long ECC Coaches indoor track meet last month. In an earlier meet this season, Thull vaulted 15 feet, 7 inches, which was a state record until he jumped even higher.
He broke the school record his sophomore year with a 14-foot jump, passing previous record holder Trevin Maiser, a 2000 ELHS graduate whose best indoor height was 11 feet, 6 inches -- 13 feet, 3 inches in outdoor track. In his junior year, Thull vaulted 14 feet, 8 inches.
“We definitely knew he had the talent and ability,â€Â
