Finally, track season

Unread postby Robert schmitt » Fri Feb 28, 2003 4:40 pm

Our track season starts on mon marcn 3rd. I'm really excited! We have new pits, We are getting a minimum of four new poles. And it sounds like we have a big turn out of freshman this year! Most of all I can start to coach again. The most frustraiting thing for me was to go to a indoor track meet and have my athlete competeing and ask for advise and having to tell them I cann't be coaching them due to WIAA rules until march 3rd

Another high school lost thier pole vault coach (Anacortes) and is going to be sending thier vaulters over to practice in additon to Mout Vernon Christian sening vaulters over. So I've been lying awake at night triing to think of the best way to effectivlly coach vault teams from three different schools at the same time with skill levels from the beginer to a state qulifier and a state champ:confused: .

One thing i did last year(had 12 vaulters), was divide them up into 2-3 groups according to skill level and have different workout schedules for each group, that way one group can be doing conditioning or another activity that requires minimal supervision, so you can focus on one smaller group. You can also recruit your top vaulters to "help out" with coaching the beginners. Just a couple of suggestions......

I've been strugling trying to find a way to break vaulters up in groups. I just don't have enough time me thinks. As in the past, I can only be there on tues. for a practice, thur. for meets, and I hold an open practice on Saturdays. How did you set 3 different schedules. After they get done with a team warm up and meeting I've typically only have an hour to practice with them. Plus when you have some kids that do other events the time limitaion is worse.

I the best thing I've come up with (unless anyone wants to volenteer to be the asst. pole vault coach at burlington-Edison :D ), is to have my most experienced vaulter, Courtney, take eveyone else that is also experienced and have them do drills while I spend the first week or so getting the newbies up to speed with pole runs, plant drills etc.... The only thing I'm wondering about (since I'm going to have vaulters from three high schools together) is that would mean putting Courtney, a junior, incharge of coaching her major competition in the league from anacortes who is a senior. I know Courtney would not have the least bit of problem with it. I don't know the Anacortes vaulter well enough to say if it would be a problem. I just realize that this is not the ideal situation and there is the potential for conflict.

ahh yes, I am glad that once again it is track season, and we have a large turn out of new vaulters...which is always great. But considering we don't have a coach, and I am the only sr, I spend all my time teaching these newbies how to hold the pole and plant!! I wish I didn't have to do this now, I still recovering from ankle surgery and have things to work on to help myself. We have a guy who calls him our coach, but he lays out the practices for me, and I basically run them and explain the drills, and help people. I'm basically everything a coach is, except I'm not paid...grrr...at least I'm back on the track though, its not all bad.
